Consortium Members collaborate to develop and evaluate innovations and new technologies in bitumen froth treatment. The Consortium was established in 1994, at which time a bitumen froth treatment pilot plant was constructed for the evaluation of technologies at the CanmetENERGY facility in Devon, Alberta.

Technologies and process improvements have been developed and deployed by industry operating companies for both naphthenic and paraffinic froth treatment. These innovations have led to step-change improvements in the recovery and production of bitumen for upgrading or for dilution to pipeline to distant upgraders or refineries.
The current Chair of the Consortium Management Committee is Gary Foulds from the Fort Hills Energy Limited Partnership.
The Froth Treatment Consortium members are: Bitmin Resources Ltd., Canadian Natural Resources Limited, CanmetENERGY – Devon,Fort Hills Enegy L.P., Imperial Oil Resources Limited, Shell Canada Ltd., Suncor Energy, Syncrude Canada, Teck Resources, and Total E&P Canada. Membership in the Consortium is limited and is not extended to other CONRAD members except by invitation from the existing Consortium members.
